JAKE'S REPORT

5-22-10 Ventura Raceway

In Saturday night's second Ventura Raceway event of the season, the Swanson Motorsports Team showed our true colors and ran the best we've run all year. There was a good turn out with a full field of 22 cars.

After starting at the back in the heat race due to an unfortunate pill pick, I was able to get to the front and check out with the leader Josh Lakatos. We had a hard fought battle for the win, but I ended up finishing 2nd all over the bumper of the Orange #4 car. But it was exactly what we needed to put the #05 Honda on the pole for the feature.

Veteran Cory Cruseman was starting directly beside me. I knew with his experience it would be tough to get a good jump on him, and maintain the lead. The Cruser and I battled hard exchanging P1. Soon, the #4 of Lakatos was in the mix. It was quite a battle for the top 3 spots until the yellow flag came out for a car parked in turn one.

I was restarting in the 3rd position when the green was flying. I jumped on the throttle to try to take advantage of the restart to regain 2nd spot, and as the rpm's picked up, bad luck stuck once again. Blue smoke billowed from both sides of the 05 Honda Machine and our night was over just like that. Later inspection shows it was a failure somewhere in the No. 3 cylinder. It's hard to swallow having such a good night go south like that, but on the same hand, this night proved that we have what it takes to compete for wins on a regular basis and we will be a force to be reckoned with out there.

I want to give a big Thank you to the crew; my dad, Mike Walker, and Mike May. They're helpful advice and mechanic skills is the reason we are battling with the best out there. And my sponsors;  Goodwine Glass, Orange County Tank Testing, Lucas Oil, K&N Filters, Oakley, EgoTactics.net, Zanzabuku Sports Lounge, New York Upper Crust Pizza, Mothers Polish, Socal Performance, and One Day Signs. Thanks to Tres and Stew Van Dyne at Van dyne Engineering for all the work they did to the motor, Danny & Bruce Crower for the awesome cams and rods, and Honda Performance. We will be back to Bakersfield for the next one June 26. Hope to see you there!

Thanks,

Jake

Tough Luck for the Swanson Motorsports Team

4-17-10 Bakersfield Raceway
After many nights of redesigning the water pump pulley system after troubles with shredding the pump belts at Ventura, it was ready to take to the track at Oildale Speedway in Bakersfield. We had an idea of the right gear we needed, but soon found out during hot laps we were not turning the proper rpm's. For qualifying we did a gear change, shock adjustment, and leaned down the engine.
I was pretty disappointed after qualifying with how we ended up, because I thought I layed down a pretty smooth lap. We found after qualifying that the water pump issues we thought we had fixed were back, the belt had flipped over but it was not torn up. We decided it was best to not mess with it and let it run upside down. It seemed to work happier without the teeth causing it to jump around. I started in the 2nd position in the heat and was confident I would stay up there. But just a few laps in the crank trigger wheel sheared itself right off the front of the engine due to the harmonics. This worked like a kill switch shutting down the engine. We were done for the night.
It was tough, but luckily it didn't tear anything up, and won't be very pricey to fix. We plan on making a few modifications to the next timing wheel that will make it much stronger. Also change a few things on the engine to get more top-in power back before the next race in Santa Maria on May 15th.
Thanks to Tres and Stew Van Dyne at Van dyne Engineering for all the work they did to the motor, Danny & Bruce Crower for the awesome cams and rods, and Honda Performance. I also have to thank Goodwine Glass, Orange County Tank Testing, Lucas Oil, K&N Filters, Oakley, EgoTactics.net, Zanzabuku Sports Lounge, New York Upper Crust Pizza, Mothers Polish, Socal Performance, and One Day Signs. And thanks to Harry Sanders and JD Laird for help at the track.

Thanks,
Jake
